G1
Come to Our Poor Nature's Night

George Rawson, 1853, 1876·Modern

Verse 1

Come to our poor nature’s night
With Thy blessed inward light,
Holy Ghost the Infinite,
Comforter Divine.

Verse 2

We are sinful—cleanse us, Lord;
Sick and faint, Thy strength afford;
Lost, until by Thee restored,
Comforter Divine.

Verse 3

Orphans are our souls, and poor;
Give us from Thy heavenly store
Faith, love, joy for evermore,
Comforter Divine.

Verse 4

Like the dew Thy peace distil;
Guide, subdue our wayward will,
Things of Christ unfolding still,
Comforter Divine.

Verse 5

Gentle, awful, holy Guest,
Make Thy temple in each breast;
There Thy presence be confessed,
Comforter Divine.

Verse 6

With us, for us, intercede,
And with voiceless groanings plead
Our unutterable need,
Comforter Divine.

Verse 7

In us, “Abba, Father,” cry,
Earnest of the bliss on high,
Seal of immortality,
Comforter Divine.

Verse 8

Search for us the depths of God;
Upwards, by the starry road,
Bear us to Thy high abode,
Comforter Divine.

Gracious Spirit, Dove Divine

John Stocker·Post-Reformation

Verse 1

Gracious Spirit, Dove Divine,
Let Thy light within me shine;
All my guilty fears remove,
Fill me full of heaven and love.

Verse 2

Speak Thy pardoning grace to me,
Set the burdened sinner free;
Lead me to the Lamb of God,
Wash me in His precious blood.

Verse 3

Life and peace to me impart;
Seal salvation on my heart;
Breathe Thyself into my breast,
Earnest of immortal rest.

Verse 4

Let me never from Thee stray,
Keep me in the narrow way,
Fill my soul with joy Divine,
Keep me, Lord, for ever Thine.
