Verse 1

Down in the valley with my Savior I would go,
Where the flowers are blooming and the sweet waters flow;
Ev’rywhere he leads me I would follow, follow on,
Walking in his footsteps till the crown be won.

Refrain

Follow! follow! I would follow Jesus!
Anywhere, everywhere I would follow on!
Follow! follow! I would follow Jesus!
Ev’rywhere he leads me I will follow on!

Verse 2

Down in the valley with my Savior I would go,
Where the storms are sweeping and the dark waters flow;
With his hand to lead me I will never, never fear,
Dangers cannot frighten me if my Lord is near.

Verse 3

Down in the valley, or upon the mountain steep,
Close beside my Savior would my soul ever keep;
He will lead me safely, in the path that he has trod,
Up to where they gather on the hills of God.

W. O. Cushing, “Down in the Valley with My Savior I Would Go”

Guide Me, Oh Thou Great Jehovah

William Williams·Post-Reformation

Verse 1

Guide me, oh thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim thro’ this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty;
Hold me with thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven,
Feed me till I want no more.

Verse 2

Open now thy crystal fountain,
Whence the healing streams do flow,
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar,
Lead me all my journey thro’;
Strong deliverer,
Be thou still my strength and shield.

Verse 3

When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Foe to death and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side;
Songs of praises,
I will ever give to thee.

William Williams, “Guide Me, Oh Thou Great Jehovah”

Verse 1

Holy Spirit, faithful Guide,
Ever near the Christian’s side;
Gently lead us by the hand,
Pilgrims in a desert land;
Weary souls for e’er rejoice,
While they hear that sweetest voice,
Whisp’ring softly, “Wanderer, come!
Follow me, I’ll guide thee home.”

Verse 2

Ever present, truest Friend,
Ever near thine aid to lend,
Leave us not to doubt and fear,
Groping on in darkness drear,
When the storms are raging sore,
Hearts grow faint, and hopes give o’er
Whisper softly, “Wanderer, come!
Follow me, I’ll guide thee home.”

Verse 3

When our days of toil shall cease,
Waiting still for sweet release,
Nothing left but heaven and prayer,
Wondering of our names were there;
Wading deep the dismal flood,
Pleading naught but Jesus’ blood;
Whisp’ring softly, “Wanderer, come!
Follow me, I’ll guide thee home.”

Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me

Edward Hopper·Modern

Verse 1

Jesus, Savior, pilot me,
Over life’s tempestuous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll,
Hiding rock and treach’rous shoal;
Chart and compass come from thee;
Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

Verse 2

As a mother stills her child,
Thou canst hush the ocean wild;
Boist’rous waves obey thy will,
When thou say’st to them “Be still!”
Wondrous Sov’reign of the sea,
Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

Verse 3

When at last I near the shore,
And the fearful breakers roar
’Twixt me and the peaceful rest,
Then, while leaning on thy breast,
May I hear thee say to me,
“Fear not, I will pilot thee!”

Edward Hopper, “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me”

Verse 1

Lead, kindly Light, amid th’ encircling gloom,
Lead thou me on,
The night is dark, and I am far from home,
Lead thou me on;
Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.

Verse 2

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that thou
Shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path, but now
Lead thou me on;
I loved the garish day, and spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years.

Verse 3

So long thy pow’r has blessed me, sure it still
Will lead me on;
O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone;
And with the morn those angel faces smile
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.

John H. Newman, “Lead, Kindly Light, Amid Th' Encircling Gloom”

The Lord My Shepherd Is

Isaac Watts·Post-Reformation

Verse 1

The Lord my Shepherd is;
I shall be well supplied:
Since he is mine, and I am his,
What can I want beside?

Verse 2

He leads me to the place
Where heavenly pasture grows,
Where living waters gently pass,
And full salvation flows.

Verse 3

If e’er I go astray,
He doth my soul reclaim,
And guides me, in his own right way,
For his most holy name.

Verse 4

While he affords his aid,
I cannot yield to fear;
Tho’ I should walk thro’ death’s dark shade,
My Shepherd’s with me there.

Isaac Watts, “The Lord My Shepherd Is”
