Are There No Wounds for Me?

Grace Webster Hinsdale·Modern

Verse 1

Are there no wounds for me?
Hast thou received them all?
How can I, Lord, the anguish see,
Beneath which thou didst fall?

Verse 2

’Tis over now, I know,--
That suffering life of thine;
Thy precious blood has ceased to flow,
Thou wear’st thy crown divine;

Verse 3

But yet, I weeping see
The thorns which pierced thy head;
Thou faint’st beneath thy cross for me,
For me to death thou’rt led!

Verse 4

Meekly, with love divine,
Thy holy head is bent,
And streams of blood, for sins of mine,
Flow where thy side is rent.

Verse 5

Beneath this sacred flood
I bow my sinful soul;
Dear Savior, let thy precious blood
Wash me and make me whole.

Dropping Souls! No Longer Mourn

Thomas Hastings·Modern

Verse 1

Dropping souls! no longer mourn,
Jesus still is precious;
If to him you now return,
Heav’n will be propitious;
Jesus now is passing by,
Calling wand’rers near him;
Drooping souls! you need not die,
Go to him and hear him!

Verse 2

He has pardons full and free,
Drooping souls to gladden;
Still he cries--“Come unto me,
Weary, heavy laden!”
Tho’ your sins, like mountains high,
Rise, and reach to heaven,
Soon as you on him rely,
All shall be forgiven.

Verse 3

Precious is the Savior’s name,
All his saints adore him;
He to save the dying came;--
Prostrate bow before him!
Wand’ring sinner! now return;
Contrite souls! believe him!
Jesus calls you; cease to mourn;
Worship him; receive him.

Thomas Hastings, “Dropping Souls! No Longer Mourn”

Hail! My Ever Blessed Jesus!

John Wingrove·Post-Reformation

Verse 1

Hail! my ever blessed Jesus!
Only thee I wish to sing.
To my soul, thy name is precious,
Thou, my Prophet, Priest, and King.

Verse 2

Oh! what mercy flows from heaven!
Oh! what joy and happiness!
Love I much? I’ve much forgiven;
I’m a miracle of grace.

Verse 3

Once with Adam’s race in ruin,
Unconcerned in sin I lay;
Swift destruction still pursuing,
Till my Savior passed that way

Verse 4

Witness, all ye host of heaven!
My Redeemer’s tenderness;
Love I much? I’ve much forgiven;
I’m a miracle of grace.

Verse 5

Shout, ye bright angelic choir!
Praise the Lamb enthroned above;
Whilst, astonished, I admire
God’s free grace, and boundless love.

Verse 6

That blest moment I received him,
Filled my soul with joy and peace:
Love I much? I’ve much forgiven;
I’m a miracle of grace.

John Wingrove, “Hail! My Ever Blessed Jesus!”

Verse 1

Jesus, my Savior, to Bethlehem came,
Born in a manger to sorrow and shame;
Oh, it was wonderful, blest be his name,
Seeking for me, for me.

Verse 2

Jesus, my Savior, on Calvary’s tree
Paid the great debt, and my soul he set free;
Oh, it was wonderful, how could it be?
Dying for me, for me.

Verse 3

Jesus, my Savior, the same as of old,
While I did wander afar from the fold,
Gently and long he hath plead with my soul,
Calling for me, for me.

Verse 4

Jesus, my Savior, shall come from on high;
Sweet is the promise as weary years fly;
Oh, I shall see him descending the sky,
Coming for me, for me.

E. E. Hasty, “Jesus, My Savior, to Bethlehem Came”

Verse 1

Listen, sinner! mercy hails you;
With her sweetest voice she calls;
Bids you hasten to the Savior,
Ere the hand of justice falls:
Listen, sinner!
’Tis the voice of mercy calls.

Verse 2

See! the storm of vengeance gathering
O’er the path you dare to tread!
Hark! the awful thunders rolling
Loud and louder o’er your head!
Flee, oh, sinner!
Lest the lightnings strike you dead.

Verse 3

Haste, ah! hasten to the Savior;
Sue his mercy while you may;
Soon the day of grace is over;
Soon your life will pass away,
Hasten sinner!
You must perish, if you stay.

Andrew Reed, “Listen, Sinner! Mercy Hails You”

Not All the Blood of Beasts

Isaac Watts·Post-Reformation

Verse 1

Not all the blood of beasts,
On Jewish altars slain,
Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or wash away the stain.

Verse 2

But Christ, the heavenly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away;
A sacrifice of nobler name,
And richer blood than they.

Verse 3

My faith would lay her hand
On that dear head of Thine,
While like a penitent I stand,
And there confess my sin.

Verse 4

My soul looks back to see
The burden thou didst bear;
While hanging on the cursed tree,
And knows her guilt was there.

Isaac Watts, “Not All the Blood of Beasts”

Verse 1

Oh, turn ye, oh, turn ye, for why will ye die,
When God, in great mercy, is coming so nigh?
Now Jesus invites you, the Spirit says, “Come!”
And angels are waiting to welcome you home.

Verse 2

How vain the delusion, that while you delay,
Your hearts may grow better by staying away!
Come wretched, come starving, come just as you be,
While streams of salvation are flowing so free.

Verse 3

And now Christ is ready your souls to receive;
Oh, how can you question, if you will believe?
If sin is your burden, why will you not come?
’Tis you he bids welcome; he bids you come home.

Verse 4

Why will you be starving, and feeding on air?
There’s mercy in Jesus, enough and to spare;
If still you are doubting, make trial and see.
And prove that his mercy is boundless and free.

Josiah Hopkins, “Oh, Turn Ye, Oh, Turn Ye, for Why Will Ye Die”

Verse 1

Oh, turn ye, oh, turn ye, for why will ye die,
When God, in great mercy, is coming so nigh?
Now Jesus invites you, the Spirit says, “Come!”
And angels are waiting to welcome you home.

Verse 2

How vain the delusion, that while you delay;
Your hearts may grow better, your chains melt away;
Come guilty, come wretched, come just as you are,
All helpless and dying, to Jesus repair.
