Holy Ghost, Dispel Our Sadness

Paul Gerhardt·Post-Reformation

Verse 1

Holy Ghost, dispel our sadness;
Pierce the clouds of nature’s night;
Come, thou Source of joy and gladness,
Breathe thy life, and spread thy light.

Verse 2

From the height which knows no measure,
As a gracious shower descend,
Bringing down the richest treasure
Man can wish, or God can send.

Verse 3

Author of the new creation,
Come with unction and with power;
Make our hearts thy habitation;
On our souls thy graces shower.

Verse 4

Hear, O hear our supplication,
Blessed Spirit, God of peace!
Rest upon this congregation,
With the fullness of thy grace.

Paul Gerhardt, “Holy Ghost, Dispel Our Sadness”

Verse 1

Spirit Divine, attend our prayers,
And make this house Thy home;
Descend with all Thy gracious powers,
O come, great Spirit, come.

Verse 2

Come as the light; to us reveal
Our emptiness and woe;
And lead us in those paths of life
Where all the righteous go.

Verse 3

Come as the fire; and purge our hearts,
Like sacrificial flame:
Let our whole soul an offering be
To our Redeemer’s Name.

Verse 4

Come as the dove; and spread Thy wings,
The wings of peaceful love;
And let Thy Church on earth become
Blest as Thy Church above.

Verse 5

Spirit Divine, attend our prayers;
Make a lost world Thy home;
Descend with all Thy gracious powers,
O come, great Spirit, come.

Andrew Reed, “Spirit Divine, Attend Our Prayers”

Verse 1

Spirit Divine! attend our prayers,
And make this house thy home;
Descend with all thy gracious powers,
Oh, come, great Spirit! come.

Verse 2

Come as the light; to us reveal
Our emptiness and woe;
And lead us in those paths of life
Where all the righteous go.

Verse 3

Come as the fire; and purge our hearts,
Like sacrificial flame;
Let our whole soul an offering be
To our Redeemer’s name.

Verse 4

Come as the dove; and spread thy wings,
The wings of peaceful love;
And let thy church on earth become
Blessed as the church above.

Verse 5

Come as the wind; with rushing sound
And pentecostal grace;
That all, of woman born, may see
The glory of thy face.

Andrew Reed, “Spirit Divine! Attend Our Prayers”

Spirit of Pow'r, and Truth, and Love

William Lindsay Alexander·Modern

Verse 1

Spirit of pow’r, and truth, and love,
Who sitt’st enthroned in light above!
Descend, and bear us on thy wings,
Far from these low and fleeting things.

Verse 2

’Tis thine the wounded soul to heal,
’Tis thine to make the hardened feel;
Thine to give light to blinded eyes,
And bid the groveling spirit rise.

Verse 3

When faith is weak, and courage fails,
When grief or doubt our soul assails,
Who can, like thee, our spirits cheer?
Great Comforter! be ever near.

Verse 4

Come, Holy Spirit! like the fire;
With burning zeal our souls inspire;
Come, like the south-wind, breathing balm,
Our joys refresh, our passions calm.

Verse 5

Come, like the sun’s enlightening beam;
Come like the cooling, cleansing stream;
With all thy graces present be:--
Spirit of God! we wait for thee.

William Lindsay Alexander, “Spirit of Pow'r, and Truth, and Love”
