Verse 1
Arise, my soul, arise,
Shake off thy guilty fears;
The bleeding sacrifice
In my behalf appears;
Before the throne my Surety stands,
My name is written on his hands.
Verse 2
He ever lives above,
For me to intercede;
His all-redeeming love,
His precious blood to plead;
His blood atoned for all our race,
And sprinkles now the throne of grace.

Five bleeding wounds he bears,
Received on Calvary;
They pour effectual prayers,
They strongly speak for me;
Forgive him, O forgive, they cry,
Nor let that ransomed sinner die.

The Father hears him pray,
His dear Anointed One;
He cannot turn away
The presence of his Son;
His Spirit answers to the blood,
And tells me I am born of God.
Verse 5
My God is reconciled,
His pard’ning voice I hear,
He owns me for his child,
I can no longer fear;
With confidence I now draw nigh,
And Father, Abba, Father, cry.

Return, ye ransomed sinners, home.

Your heritage above!

Elisha A. Hoffman, “Christ Has for Sin Atonement Made”
Verse 1
Come to the blood-stained tree;
The Victim bleeding lies;
God sets the sinner free,
Since Christ, a ransom, dies.
Verse 2
The Spirit will apply
His blood to cleanse thy stain;
Oh, burdened soul, draw nigh,
For none can come in vain!
Verse 3
Dark though thy guilt appear,
And deep its crimson stain,
There’s boundless mercy here,
Oh, do not still disdain.
Verse 4
Look not within for peace,
Within, there’s nought to cheer;
Look up, and find release
From sin, and self, and fear.
Charles Wesley·Post-Reformation
Verse 1
Depth of mercy! can there be
Mercy still reserved for me?
Can my God his wrath forbear?
Me, the chief of sinners, spare?
Refrain
God is love; I know, I feel;
Jesus weeps and loves me still;
Jesus weeps and loves me still.
Verse 2
I have long withstood his grace,
Long provoked him to his face;
Would not hearken to his calls;
Grieved him by a thousand falls.
Verse 3
There for me the Savior stands;
Shows his wounds and spreads his hands;
God is love; I know, I feel;
Jesus weeps, and loves me still.
Verse 4
Now incline me to repent;
Let me now my fall lament;
Now my foul revolt deplore;
Weep, believe, and sin no more.

John Bakewell, 1757, enlarged in M. Madan's Coll. 1760: alt. A. M. Toplady, 1776·Post-Reformation
Verse 1
Hail, Thou once despised Jesus,
Hail, Thou Galilean King!
Thou didst suffer to release us:
Thou didst free salvation bring.
Hail, Thou agonizing Saviour,
Bearer of our sin and shame!
By Thy merits we find favor:
Life is given through Thy Name.
Verse 2
Paschal Lamb, by God appointed,
All our sins were on Thee laid;
By Almighty Love anointed,
Thou hast full atonement made:
All Thy people are forgiven
Through the virtue of Thy blood;
Opened is the gate of heaven,
Peace is made ‘twixt man and God.
Verse 3
Jesus, hail! enthroned in glory,
There for ever to abide;
All the heavenly hosts adore Thee,
Seated at Thy Father’s side:
There for sinners Thou art pleading;
There Thou dost our place prepare;
Ever for us interceding,
Till in glory we appear.
Verse 4
Worship, honor, power, and blessing
Thou art worthy to receive:
Loudest praises without ceasing,
Meet it is for us to give.
Help, ye bright angelic spirits,
Bring your sweetest, noblest lays;
Help to sing our Saviour’s merits,
Help to chant Emmanuel’s praise.
Charles Simeon·Modern
Let us turn our eyes to our great Exemplar, the Lord Jesus Christ … Here, you see, is our pattern. But what resemblance do we bear to him? The leaving of all the glory of heaven, the taking of our nature with all its sinless infirmities, the dying under the weight of our sins, even of the sins of the whole world, were not too great acts of self-denial for him to perform; and that, too, even for his enemies. But we, what have we done? What have we suffered, for the glory of Christ, and the salvation of men? Say, whether we all have not reason to blush and be ashamed at our extreme want of conformity to him in these respects?
Charles Simeon, Philippians to 1 Timothy
