God Eternal, Lord of All

Anonymous (Latin, 5th Century); tr. James E. Millard, 1848·Patristic

Verse 1

God Eternal, Lord of all,
Lowly at Thy feet we fall;
All the earth doth worship Thee;
We amidst the throng would be.

Verse 2

All the holy angels cry,
“Hail, thrice Holy, God Most High!”
Lord of all the heavenly powers,
Be the same loud anthem ours.

Verse 3

Glorified apostles raise
Night and day continual praise;
Hast Thou not a mission too
For Thy children here to do?

Verse 4

With Thy prophets’ goodly line
We in mystic bond combine;
For Thou hast to babes revealed
Things that to the wise were sealed.

Verse 5

Martyrs, in a noble host,
Of Thy cross are heard to boast;
Since so bright the crown they wear,
Early we Thy cross would bear.

Verse 6

All Thy Church in heaven and earth,
Jesus, hail Thy spotless birth,
Own the God who all has made,
And the Spirit’s soothing aid.

Verse 7

Offspring of a Virgin’s womb,
Slain, and Victor o’er the tomb,
Seated on the judgment-throne,
Number us among Thine own.

O God, We Praise Thee; and Confess

Anonymous (Latin, 5th Century); tr. Tate and Brady's Supplement, 1700·Patristic

Verse 1

O God, we praise Thee; and confess
That Thou, the only Lord
And Everlasting Father, art
By all the earth adored.

Verse 2

To Thee all angels cry aloud;
To Thee the powers on high,
Both cherubim and seraphim,
Continually do cry:—

Verse 3

O Holy, Holy, Holy Lord,
Whom heavenly hosts obey,
The world is with the glory filled
Of Thy majestic ray.

Verse 4

The apostles’ glorious company,
And prophets crowned with light,
With all the martyrs’ noble host,
Thy constant praise recite.

Verse 5

The holy Church throughout the world,
O Lord, confesses Thee,
That Thou Eternal Father art,
Of boundless majesty;

Verse 6

Thy honored, true, and only Son;
And Holy Ghost, the Spring
Of never-ceasing joy: O Christ,
Of glory Thou art King.
